Why Laughter Belongs in a Wedding Ceremony

Why Laughter Belongs in a Wedding Ceremony

If there is one sound I absolutely love hearing during a wedding ceremony, it’s laughter.

Not polite laughter.

Not “the celebrant has clearly just made a joke so we should probably laugh now” laughter.

I mean the real stuff.

The unexpected snort. The bride trying to compose herself. The groom absolutely losing it over a story he had forgotten about. The guests laughing because they know exactly what I’m talking about. Those moments where everyone relaxes and, for a few seconds, it feels less like a formal wedding ceremony and more like a group of people who genuinely know and love the two people standing in front of them.

As a Port Douglas wedding celebrant, those are some of my favourite moments.

Because laughter doesn’t take away from the importance of a wedding ceremony.

I actually think it adds to it.

Your Wedding Ceremony Doesn't Have to Be Serious to Be Meaningful

Somewhere along the way, weddings became associated with the idea that the ceremony is the serious bit.

Everyone sits quietly. The couple stands at the front. The celebrant says Important Wedding Things. Everyone behaves themselves.

Then you get to the reception and apparently you're allowed to have fun.

I disagree.

A wedding ceremony is an incredibly meaningful moment, but meaningful doesn't have to mean solemn.

You are standing there marrying the person you love, surrounded by people who know you best. There should be emotion. There should be beautiful moments. There might be tears.

But if laughter is part of your relationship and for most couples it absolutely is then it belongs there too.

As a Port Douglas marriage celebrant, my job isn't to turn your ceremony into a stand-up comedy set.

Trust me, nobody needs that.

My job is to create a ceremony that feels like you.

And sometimes that means we laugh.

A lot.

The Best Laughter Is Never Forced

There is a huge difference between a funny wedding ceremony and a celebrant desperately trying to be funny.

I never want a couple standing in front of me thinking, please stop.

The best laughs during ceremonies aren't usually big scripted punchlines anyway.

They come from the couple's story.

They come from the tiny details.

The terrible first date.

The questionable first impression.

The weird habit everyone knows about.

The proposal that didn't quite go according to plan.

The story about who said "I love you" first.

The little things one person does that drives the other completely mad but that they would secretly miss if they ever stopped doing them.

That's where the good stuff lives.

When I'm writing a ceremony as a Marriage Celebrant in Port Douglas, I'm looking for those moments because they tell me something about the couple.

And when their guests laugh, it's often because they're thinking, Yep. That's them.

That's exactly the reaction I want.

Laughter Helps Everyone Relax

Wedding ceremonies come with nerves.

Even the calmest person can suddenly find themselves standing at the front wondering what they're supposed to do with their hands.

And that's completely normal.

Then something funny happens.

Someone laughs.

The couple looks at each other.

The shoulders drop.

And suddenly everyone remembers that this isn't a performance.

You're not being graded.

There is no Wedding Ceremony Olympics.

You're simply there to marry your favourite person.

Laughter has this wonderful ability to break through nerves and bring everyone into the moment. It makes the ceremony feel warm, relaxed and human.

Whether I'm conducting an intimate Elopement in Port Douglas, a Port Douglas Beach Wedding, or a larger Destination Wedding, that feeling matters to me.

I want my couples to be present enough to actually enjoy what is happening.

The Ceremony Should Sound Like Your Relationship

Every couple has their own rhythm.

Some are incredibly romantic.

Some constantly take the mickey out of each other.

Some communicate almost entirely through sarcasm and snacks.

Most are a mixture of everything.

That's why I don't believe wedding ceremonies should all sound the same.

If you're naturally funny together, your ceremony should have humour.

If you're affectionate but not overly gushy, I'm not going to suddenly turn you into characters from a romance novel.

If you've spent ten years laughing at each other, winding each other up and somehow finding humour even when life gets messy, it would feel strange to suddenly become extremely formal for the 20 or 30 minutes in which you get married.

Your ceremony should still sound and feel like the people your family and friends know.

Funny and Heartfelt Can Absolutely Exist Together

Some of my favourite ceremonies move between laughter and emotion without either feeling forced.

One minute everyone is laughing.

The next, one of you hears something your partner has said about you and suddenly you're trying very hard not to cry.

Then we're laughing again.

That's real life.

Relationships aren't one emotion.

You can deeply love someone and also think they're completely ridiculous.

In fact, there's a pretty good chance those two things are connected.

The beauty of a personalised ceremony is being able to capture all of it the romance, the friendship, the ridiculous stories, the things you admire about one another and those little details that make your relationship yours.

That's what I love creating as a Port Douglas wedding celebrant.

Your Guests Should Feel Part of It Too

There's another thing laughter does beautifully: it connects everyone.

When guests recognise a story or personality trait, you can almost feel the energy change.

They're no longer simply watching a ceremony.

They're part of it.
