When you're planning a wedding, there are approximately 47,000 decisions to make.
Venue. Photographer. Flowers. Music. Food. Dress. Suits. Cake. Seating charts. Whether Aunt Susan can be trusted at the same table as Uncle Barry.
And somewhere amongst all of that, you need to choose your celebrant.
It can be tempting to look at celebrants as one of the simpler decisions. Find someone available, make sure they're legally registered, compare a few prices and tick it off the list.
But here's the thing.
Your celebrant can completely set the tone for your wedding day.
And that's why I don't think choosing one should ever come down to price alone.
Your ceremony is where the day really begins
Before the champagne starts flowing, before everyone hits the dance floor and well before someone loses a shoe, there's your ceremony.
It's the first time your guests see you.
It's where the nerves are.
It's where your families come together.
It's where you make some fairly enormous promises to each other.
And standing right there in the middle of it all is your celebrant.
The right celebrant can settle your nerves, make your guests feel welcome, get people laughing at exactly the right moment and then bring everything back when it's time for the meaningful stuff.
They can read a room.
They know when to speak, when to pause and perhaps most importantly, when to get out of the bloody way.
That energy carries into everything that follows.
You're not just paying someone to do the legal bits
Yes, your celebrant has an important legal job to do.
But if that were all we did, choosing a celebrant would be pretty easy.
What you're really choosing is the person you're trusting with the atmosphere of one of the biggest moments of your wedding.
You're paying for their experience, preparation, writing, communication, organisation and ability to stand in front of everyone you love and tell your story in a way that actually sounds like you.
You're paying for the confidence that when you're standing there feeling excited, emotional and potentially wondering what on earth you're supposed to do with your hands, someone has it completely under control.
And you're choosing a personality.
That last part matters enormously.
So, should you choose the cheapest celebrant?
I understand wedding budgets. Completely.
Weddings are expensive, and there will inevitably be areas where you decide to save and others where you decide to spend.
But I wouldn't choose your celebrant based purely on who gives you the lowest quote.
There will always be someone cheaper.
Just as there will always be photographers, florists, venues and musicians at completely different price points.
Price often reflects differences in experience, preparation, service, demand and the amount of time someone puts into what they deliver.
But more importantly, you can't price match personality.
If one celebrant costs a little more but you immediately connect with them, love their style, trust them completely and can picture yourself standing there with them on your wedding day, that's worth considering.
Saving a few hundred dollars isn't necessarily a saving if you end up with a ceremony that doesn't feel like you.
Find the celebrant you'd actually want standing beside you
When couples are looking for a Port Douglas Wedding Celebrant, my biggest piece of advice is to look beyond the package and price.
Read their reviews.
Watch their videos.
Look through their socials.
Read their website and see how they communicate.
Do they make you laugh?
Do they make you feel comfortable?
Can you imagine having a conversation with them?
And most importantly, does their personality match the kind of ceremony you want?
Because celebrants aren't interchangeable.
Some are beautifully traditional. Some are romantic and sentimental. Some are energetic. Some are understated. Some are brilliant storytellers.
And some of us firmly believe there is absolutely no reason your wedding ceremony can't have you laughing one minute and wiping away a tear the next.
You need to find your person.
What does a great wedding celebrant actually bring to the day?
For me, a great ceremony should feel effortless to everyone watching it.
But behind that effortless 20 or 30 minutes is a lot of work.
I've been a Marriage Celebrant in Port Douglas since 2017, and experience has taught me that the little things matter.
Knowing how to calm someone who's suddenly overwhelmed.
Knowing when a joke will land and when one absolutely will not.
Knowing how to deal with a microphone having a tantrum, a flower girl staging a revolt, someone arriving late or tropical North Queensland weather deciding it would like to become part of the ceremony.
And doing all of it without the couple having to worry about what's happening behind the scenes.
That's part of what you're investing in when you choose an experienced celebrant.
Not simply someone who turns up and says the legally required words.
Your ceremony shouldn't feel like something you have to get through
This is probably the biggest misconception I'd love to see disappear from weddings.
The ceremony isn't the boring bit before the party.
It is part of the party.
Your guests should be engaged. You should feel comfortable. There should be moments that make everyone laugh because they're genuinely funny, not because your celebrant has shoehorned in a joke they've used at the previous 36 weddings.
There should be warmth.
There should be personality.
There should be moments where you look at each other and forget, just briefly, that everyone else is standing there.
And when it's finished, you should walk back down that aisle thinking:
That was so us.
Looking for a Port Douglas Wedding Celebrant?
If you're planning a wedding in Port Douglas, Palm Cove, Cairns or anywhere across Far North Queensland and you're looking for a celebrant, don't just look for someone who's available.
Look for someone you connect with.
Whether that's me or another celebrant whose personality feels completely right for you, choose the person you trust to create the atmosphere you want.
My style is fun, relaxed and warm. I love genuine laughter, great stories, happy tears and ceremonies where your guests actually pay attention.
No forced jokes. No cheesy clichés. No ceremony that could belong to any other couple.
Because long after you've forgotten exactly what the flowers cost or whether you upgraded the napkins, you'll remember how you felt standing there together.
And choosing the right celebrant has a lot to do with that.
