The Best Wedding Ceremony Locations in Port Douglas

The Best Wedding Ceremony Locations in Port Douglas

If you’re planning a wedding in Port Douglas, firstly, excellent choice.

We have palm trees, mountains, the Coral Sea, ridiculously good sunsets and wedding ceremony locations that require very little convincing from a styling perspective. Port Douglas is basically an overachiever when it comes to wedding backdrops.

As a Port Douglas Wedding Celebrant, I’ve been lucky enough to marry couples in some truly beautiful spots around town. And while choosing your ceremony location ultimately comes down to the style of wedding you want, there are a handful of Port Douglas wedding locations that I come back to again and again.

So, if you’re currently Googling where to get married in Port Douglas, here are some of my favourites.

Little Cove, Port Douglas

If someone asked me to show them what a Port Douglas wedding looks like in one photograph, there’s a very good chance I’d take them to Little Cove.

Tucked beside Rex Smeal Park, Little Cove gives you that quintessential tropical North Queensland combination of green lawn, palm trees, water and mountains in the distance. It feels intimate without being isolated, and you get the beauty of a beachside ceremony without necessarily having to stand barefoot in sand while your guests slowly sink into it.

It is also incredibly convenient. You’re close to town, close to reception venues and surrounded by beautiful spots for photos afterwards.

Little Cove is already one of Port Douglas’ most popular wedding ceremony locations, and in 2026 Douglas Shire Council completed further landscaping improvements to the area.

Best for: Couples wanting an intimate, tropical, quintessentially Port Douglas ceremony.

My celebrant verdict: There’s a reason this one is so popular. It’s bloody beautiful.

Rex Smeal Park

Right next door is the iconic Rex Smeal Park.

If Little Cove is the intimate younger sister, Rex Smeal is the one who likes a bit more room to move.

You’ve got huge tropical trees, sprawling green lawns, palm trees and views across the water towards the rainforest-covered mountains. And when Port Douglas turns on one of its famous sunsets, this place is pretty hard to beat.

The extra space also makes Rex Smeal Park a fantastic option if you’re planning a larger ceremony or want something a little more expansive.

It is also brilliant from a photography perspective because once the ceremony is finished, you already have so many different backdrops within walking distance.

Best for: Larger weddings, tropical outdoor ceremonies and couples chasing those beautiful Port Douglas sunset photos.

St Mary’s by the Sea

You really can’t talk about Port Douglas wedding ceremony locations without talking about St Mary’s.

St Mary’s by the Sea is one of the most recognisable wedding locations in Port Douglas. It’s a gorgeous historic, non-denominational chapel sitting right on the waterfront, complete with traditional timber pews and an incredible window behind the altar looking straight out towards the Coral Sea.

So you get the feeling and intimacy of a chapel ceremony without sacrificing the tropical Port Douglas backdrop you travelled all this way for.

It’s also right beside Little Cove, Rex Smeal Park and the Sugar Wharf, which means once the ceremony is over, you have some of the best Port Douglas wedding photography locations practically on the doorstep.

Best for: Couples who love a traditional ceremony setting but still want that unmistakable Port Douglas feel.

The Port Douglas Sugar Wharf

The Sugar Wharf is another absolute Port Douglas icon.

Sitting on Dickson Inlet with views across the water towards the Daintree Rainforest, the heritage-listed timber building has loads of character and is completely different from your traditional ballroom wedding venue.

The deck can be used for ceremonies as well as events, so it works beautifully for couples who love the idea of getting married right on the waterfront.

And photographically? You have timber, water, mountains, boats, palms and beautiful afternoon light all within a tiny area. Your photographer isn't exactly going to be short of options.

Best for: Couples wanting something relaxed, iconic, waterfront and unmistakably Port Douglas.

Four Mile Beach

If your vision of getting married in Port Douglas involves toes in the sand, ocean behind you and absolutely no confusion about the fact that you've chosen a tropical destination wedding Four Mile Beach delivers.

There are different areas along the beach that can work beautifully for ceremonies, from locations closer to town through to quieter spots towards the southern end.

The big consideration here is Mother Nature.

Wind, tides, heat and the time of day can make an enormous difference to a beach ceremony. This is where using experienced local wedding suppliers is worth its weight in gold. We know that something looking spectacular at 4.30pm doesn't necessarily mean it'll behave the same way at midday with a 20-knot breeze.

But when the conditions are right? It's magic.

Best for: Elopements, intimate weddings and couples who really want that barefoot tropical wedding experience.

A Port Douglas Resort Wedding

If convenience is high on your list, don't overlook having your ceremony at your resort.

Port Douglas has some spectacular resort grounds, gardens and beachside spaces, and there is something very appealing about getting ready, getting married, celebrating and eventually stumbling happily back to your room without requiring an elaborate transport operation.

Resort ceremonies can also give you something every outdoor wedding in the tropics should have: a solid wet-weather plan.

Because as your Port Douglas Marriage Celebrant, I would love to tell you it never rains here.

That would be a lie.

It is tropical North Queensland. All that spectacular green rainforest didn't get there through positive thinking.

So, which Port Douglas wedding ceremony location should you choose?

There genuinely isn't one "best" location.

If you want intimate and tropical, look at Little Cove. If you want space, palms and sunsets, Rex Smeal Park is hard to go past. If you've always pictured yourself walking down an aisle in a beautiful chapel, look at St Mary's by the Sea. For history and waterfront character, consider the Sugar Wharf. And if you want sand between your toes, start exploring Four Mile Beach.

The best Port Douglas wedding ceremony location is the one that feels most like the two of you — and works practically for your guest numbers, styling, accessibility, weather plan and reception location.

One important little admin note: some public spaces in Port Douglas need to be booked, and depending on the size and setup of your wedding, council approval may also be required. Douglas Shire Council specifically requires venue hire for popular spaces including Little Cove and Rex Smeal Park, so always check the current requirements before locking everything in.
